Solving the energy and climate crises through microgrids
Could microgrids help solve the current energy and climate crises? We discussed it with an expert panel at Powered On Live.

At the recent Powered On Live event, we gathered a panel of experts to discuss the future of microgrids in the UK and how they could help solve the current energy and climate crises.
Joining the panel were Kayla Ente, Chief Executive and Founder, Brighton and Hove Energy Services Co-operative; Darren Jones, UK Technology Manager, Hitachi Energy; and Kas Mohammed, Vice President, UK&I Digital Buildings, Schneider Electric.
During the hour-long session, our panel discussed:
- How are microgrids contributing to the energy transition and the move to net zero?
- The cost of living crisis has been a major subject in recent months, but community energy gives those an opportunity to lower their long-term bills by investing in renewables. How does it work?
- What are some of the disadvantages of a microgrid vs the national grid?
- This idea of community-collaboration on infrastructure has become more popular in recent years, whether it’s through the installation of fibre broadband or community power projects. Why do you think that is?
- Many businesses invest in microgrids that leverage diesel generators, such as those reliant on power, such as data centres or hospitals. How are these microgrids evolving?
- How are additional technologies, such as AI, feeding into the development of microgrid technology, and what’s next for microgrids?
- And much more.
