ABB to conduct major electrical service of Transocean drillship

ABB has won an order from Transocean Nigeria to conduct a major service of the electrical generation sets on its 46,000 ton drillship GSF Jack Ryan.

Stephen Colman, ABB's account manager for Marine and Cranes, says: "We have a strong relationship with Transocean and conducted an electrical healthcare check on the Jack Ryan, covering the vessel's medium voltage (MV) switchgear and rotating machines. Conducting this survey has lead us to recommend a major service programme on the ship's electrical systems."

The focus of the service will be on the ship's eight electrical generators, and will be conducted under ABB's L4 programme, the highest level of service offered by the company.

ABB's preventive maintenance L4 for MV synchronous machines is a comprehensive service process that examines all aspects of the machine. The work includes examinations of high voltage cables, stator, rotor and excitation unit, cleaning of all major sub-assemblies and replacement of components such as shells, seals and gaskets and bearing temperature sensors.

The current order includes the parts needed for the eight generators and the service visit for the work on the first two machines, which is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. The vessel is operating in Nigeria but the final location for the work has not yet been determined.
