UK Power Networks initiates open data service to support EV charging
UK Power Networks has unveiled the UK’s first open-source power cut software aimed at enhancing EV charging reliability, dubbed Powercast.

UK Power Networks has unveiled the UK’s first open-source power cut software aimed at enhancing EV charging reliability, dubbed Powercast.
This move, following a collaborative trial with ev.energy, aims to get more reliable information to EV drivers about whether a charger could be out of service due to a power outage. This has led UK Power Networks to make available a new API for the software that is available to all EV charging providers within London, the South East, and East of England.
The application of this API allows EV drivers to be better informed, enabling them to plan their charging schedules effectively or to locate alternative charging options in anticipation of power outages. The system notifies users about both scheduled and unscheduled power disruptions, amendments in electricity work schedules, and the anticipated times for power restoration, along with updates when power is reinstated.
ev.energy was the first charging service to implement Powercast, integrating this function for all drivers within UK Power Networks’ domain through their mobile application. The initiative is also being extended to other charging operators to enhance the utility of this open data resource.
This development is particularly significant as over a third of EV drivers do not have the option of using an alternative vehicle. The introduction of this feature is expected to bolster drivers' assurance in their ability to charge their EVs as needed and promote a broader transition from petrol and diesel vehicles.
Luca Grella, Innovation Lead at UK Power Networks, commented, “The impact the widescale adoption of EVs will have on our climate cannot be overstated. Over half a million of our customers have already transitioned to EVs, but our goal is to facilitate a safe and dependable conversion to low carbon technology for everyone connected to our networks."

Powercast enables our users to make well-informed charging decisions and reduces inconvenience during power outages."
