Newly-enhanced ICEL product certification scheme launched

The Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting (ICEL) and the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) have introduced an enhanced ICEL Product Certification Scheme, which is aimed at elevating standards in emergency lighting. 

This revised scheme transitions from an endorsed to a certified model, promising higher levels of quality and safety assurance for emergency lighting products.

The scheme offers independent verification of emergency lighting products, and is designed as a reliable mark of quality. Certified products, identifiable by the ICEL Certification mark, will be subject to extensive evaluation including a review of product specifications and supporting technical documentation.

The certification now encompasses a broader range of products such as luminaires, control gears, and batteries, aligning with the Low Voltage Directive and the UK Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations. 

Companies currently enrolled in the earlier scheme are provided a transitional period to adjust to the new certification requirements, which now include updated standards and a widened scope.

One significant change in the scheme is the mandatory submission of photometric data by manufacturers. The LIA Laboratory reviews this data and, if necessary, conducts retests to confirm accuracy, adding an extra layer of validation to the claims made by manufacturers.

The ICEL Product Certification Scheme is now accessible for download by all, extending beyond ICEL members, aiming to boost confidence across the emergency lighting sector.
