Electricity North West to host inaugural women's careers day

Electricity North West is launching its first ever women's careers day next month, aiming to address the gender imbalance within the sector. 

This initiative is part of the company's broader commitment to enhance workforce diversity and is specifically designed to encourage more women to consider careers in this field.

The company has set a target to increase female representation across various roles to at least 30% by 2028, with a particular focus on leadership positions, where it aims for 37% representation. 

The event will be held at the Electricity North West’s training academy in Blackburn and will feature two introductory sessions. Prospective attendees will have the opportunity to interact with current female employees, who will share insights into their experiences and the company culture.

In addition to discussions about the company’s benefits, such as pensions and family-friendly policies, the day will include live engineering demonstrations and interactive panels on a range of topics.

Rachael Parr, Electricity North West’s People and Corporate Services Director, emphasised the importance of the event, saying, “For some time, the utilities industry has lagged behind other sectors, particularly when it comes to diversity. We’ve recognised this and as well as setting targets, we want to do everything we can to ensure we not only reach but surpass them. This is the first time we’ve dedicated a careers day solely aimed at women and we want it to be a day to remember.”

The careers day is scheduled for July 17, 2024 at the Electricity North West Training Academy in Blackburn, with sessions running from 1-3pm and 5-7pm. The event is open to participants from the North West and beyond, requiring no prior engineering experience. Attendance is free, with on-site parking available, though places are limited.
