Capacity upgrade rolled out to Bermondsey as part of £10 million regeneration

UK Power Networks has confirmed that it has made significant upgrades to the electricity infrastructure in Bermondsey as part of a £10 million regeneration programme. 

As part of the upgrade, the distribution network operator’s site at Verney Road received a new electricity supply point, giving the network more headroom to play with. This will allow for the connection of more EV chargers and heat pumps, which will increase the demand for electricity. 

The upgrade forms part of key regeneration work for Bermondsey and its surrounding areas which will mean engineers can decommission older electricity cabling in the area and move into a new era with state-of-the-art equipment for the future.

UK Power Networks has been aggressively upgrading its network to be smarter, with the company recently trialling new Active Response software that opens up capacity for things like EV chargers and heat pumps. 

Damian Conroy, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “This area is home to regeneration and new investment so ensuring the lights are kept on for all is vital. That’s why we are making a significant investment into this project.

“We are working in partnership with our alliance of contractors to support the substantial increase that will be required in capacity to distribute power across this busy area.”

UK Power Networks says that it is constantly working to improve the performance of its network and to meet future needs for power. This network improvement project is part of the company’s £600 million investment in its electricity networks this year, to help local communities achieve their decarbonisation ambitions; so as more customers turn to low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, they have a supply and infrastructure that’s fit for purpose.
