Reducing the risk
TAS recently presented to safety and compliance managers at the annual IOSH Conference in Telford. Below is a summary of its non technical arc flash presentation.
If you have an HV or LV system you could be at risk of an electrical arc flash - To reduce the risks of an arc flash:
- Wherever possible, try to eliminate a worker away from the possibility of a burn.
- Imperative! Update and document your systems.
- For new investments implement a remote switching system.
- Engineer issues out - Identify fault level studies, load flow analysis, set protection gradings, conduct arc flash study, update all distribution system records.
- Eliminate pre identify risks, implement procedures and label equipment correctly.
- Mitigate (moderate dangers to make them less severe) - via procedures and training.
- Calculate thermal values required & protect with relevant levels of FR PPE
- PPE - The last line of defence!. Make sure PPE is CE marked.
