Urgent action needed in graduate shortfall

A bursary of £1000 a year should be given to science and engineering graduates as part of a plan to double the proportion of students taking these subjects the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has suggested.
The business group has warned urgent action is needed to reverse a decades-long decine in the study of science, technology, engineering and maths (‘STEM’) subjects to meet the needs of a changing UK enconomy, and help deliver the 2.4m STEM-quaified staff needed by 2014.
Science and engineering companies in this country are already struggling to fill posts: 80% of engineering or industrial companies and 67% of energy, water or utility companies expect a shortfall in overall graduate recruits this year.
