LCH generators electrify the Forth Road Bridge
Glasgow-based LCH Generators has supplied two 27kVA generators to Lincolnshire-based civil engineering company C Spencer for use on the Forth Road Bridge inspection contract.
C Spencer, which has a long track record in bridge maintenance work, is stripping the outer casing off the main cables to allow consulting engineer Faber Maunsell to carry out the first scheduled inspection of 40-year-old cables. The client is the Forth Estuary Transport Authority.
Under the watchful eye of general foreman Harry Lindley, C Spencer’s team is removing the outer casing, comprising a painted, galvanised steel wire winding and a red-lead paste to protect the inner cable against corrosion.
The two LCH generators are supplying electricity to the workforce, which operates from special platforms suspended up to 150 metres above the Firth of Forth. The generators also supply electricity to the site cabins and a decontamination unit, which removes all traces of lead from the workers’ clothing and equipment.
