E.On officially opens Scroby Sands wind farm
Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson and E.On chief executive Paul Golby have officially opened the Scroby Sands wind farm, which consists of 30 wind turbines and can generate approximately 60MW of power.
The £75m wind farm, off the coast of Great Yarmouth, should displace 75,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. Work was completed in December and the site was officially taken over by E.On in January.
A recorded message from the secretary of state for trade and industry, Patricia Hewitt, was played at the opening ceremony, held in Caister Lifeboat Station. Hewitt said: “Connecting Scroby Sands to the grid establishes the UK as the world’s second-biggest generator of offshore wind-power.
“Our plans for further offshore wind farms around the UK represent the world’s biggest-ever expansion of renewable energy, plans that are good for the environment, good for Britain’s energy needs and good for the economy.”
