Illicit enrichment

The former head of Alcatel in Costa Rica, Edgar Valverde, has been taken into custody with prosecutors alleging that Alcatel tried to acquire the rights to 400,000 cellular telephone lines in a contract with the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, which holds a monopoly over the country’s telecommunications licenses.
Former head of the Organization of American States, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, was also arrested on suspicion of taking bribes during his term as Costa Rican president. Rodriguez announced a week ago he would abandon his post as OAS secretary general to defend himself against charges that he took money from the French telecom giant Alcatel. He is accused of bribery, corruption and illicit enrichment.
