IET nominated for Royal Television Society award
A series of short films produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to promote science, engineering and technology to school students has been nominated for a Royal Television Society (RTS) Educational Television award.
The films were part of the IET's Faraday programme, a year long resource available for schools to promote the world of engineering to young people in an attempt to inspire them to study the relevant examination subjects.
Jan Stapleton, IET manager, education 5-19, said, "The RTS Educational Television Awards recognise the best in audio-visual support for learning, so it's a huge honour to be nominated.
"The current decline in the uptake of science, engineering and technology careers by young people is a great concern. Through the IET's Faraday programme, we wanted to inspire a curiosity in science and an enthusiasm to find out more. The films provided a powerful and dynamic way to communicate a complex subject and to dispel the myths around engineering."
The IET's Faraday programme is accessible to all secondary schools in the country through a dedicated website. There is also a series of events, staged around the UK, with workshops and break-out sessions designed to maximise the children's participation.
Every year the RTS holds seven awards ceremonies recognising excellence across the entire range of programme making and broadcasting skills. The awards are judged by a panel of leading figures in the broadcasting industry. The RTS Educational Television awards will be announced at a ceremony on 16 June in London.
