Energy efficiency on trial

Balfour Kilpatrick, the multi services and power systems business of Balfour Beatty, has been awarded a £3m contract to provide design, supply and installation services for a new court building at Caernarfon Criminal Justice Centre for tenant, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

The new court building in Wales, a project which is one of a series being procured under the Private Developer Scheme Initiative, will be a 4,000m2 four-court facility comprising a magistrates’ court, two Crown courts and one youth court. There will also be a Welsh language unit. The property has been forward sold to London and Capital.

The services that are being designed and installed by Balfour Kilpatrick include HVAC, electrical and plumbing services with an emphasis on energy efficiency. The company is employing rainwater harvesting, low NOX condensing boilers, natural ventilation ‘windcatchers’ in addition to lighting control systems based on occupancy sensing and daylight availability. The building will be achieving a Breeam ‘Excellent’ rating.

Balfour Kilpatrick has recently started on site and is carrying out the works for client Balfour Beatty Construction. Balfour Beatty Construction is working for ultimate client Cityheart.
