CMC.T210.1 Power System Protection Testing with the CMC Test System February 2012

  • PDF

Objectives

Participants learn how to efficiently test the fundamental parameters for overcurrent protection, line protection and transformer differential protection with the CMC test system. They will become familiar with the test procedure for secondary relay testing in alternating hands-on and minds-on activities. Useful hints for testing, practical exercises on the OMICRON test towers and creating re-usable test documents complete the OMICRON learning experience.

Contents

• Quick current and voltage output using QuickCMC and the Fault Calculator

• Introduction to protection testing using the OMICRON Control Center (OCC):

Entering test object parameters in the test object definition and configuring the hardware

(to be done in each of the subsequent OCC test documents), introduction intoXRIO and LinkToXRIO

• Creating an OCC test document for essential overcurrent protection functions: Ip (Ramping), I>> (Pulse Ramping), trip times (Overcurrent)

• Creating an OCC test document for essential distance protection functions:

Backup overcurrent protection (Ramping, Overcurrent), overcurrent starting (Ramping), reaches and trip times (Advanced Distance), switch on to fault (State Sequencer),auto-reclosing (Autoreclosure)

• Creating an OCC test document for essential transformer differential protection functions:

System configuration (Diff Configuration), operating characteristic (Diff Operating Characteristic), trip times (Diff Trip Time), stabilization against inrush conditions and overexcitation (Diff Harmonic Restraint).

Target group

Personnel from electric utilities or companies responsible for testing and commissioning line protection and transformer differential protection systems.

Note

The OMICRON test towers are equipped with protective relays from different manufacturers, laptop computers, CMC test sets and the OMICRON SimBox which simulates the fields the relays operate in. Each group of 2 to 3 persons will have one test tower available for practical testing.
