Starting in November, the University of Manchester will be running a series of CPD courses in Power Systems Protection. These courses have been designed in response to requests from industry and will be taking place in Manchester, U.K.
There are a total of six courses available which have been designed to satisfy the initial training requirements of the graduate electrical engineers who want to specialise in the protection and control of transmission and distribution networks.
Courses available are:
• Understanding of Electrical Power Systems (relevant to Protection)
• Fundamentals of Power System Protection
• Introduction to Communications (for power systems)
• Protection of Distribution Networks
• Protection and Control of Transmission Networks
• Experimental Assessment of Relay Operating Performance
The courses are offered in small chunks to allow flexibility however a discount is available to those wishing to undertake all six courses and can count as 30 credits towards a post graduate degree. The courses will help plant electrical engineers or the electrical consultant increase their knowledge of the protection of an industrial or commercial network and ensure they have the practical skills necessary for this role. They are designed and led by both academics and industry professionals with extensive experience in Power System Protection including Joule Centre Director Professor Peter Crossley with who has over 30 years industrial and academic experience in the field.

FREE PRACTICAL HANDS-ON SOLAR PV
SITE SURVEY AND COMMISSIONING TEST TRAINING
Solar PV test specialist Seaward Solar is hosting a series of free hands-on training courses across the country to help installers to fully understand the electrical testing requirements of solar PV systems.
The course is designed to give installers the practical hands-on experience required to build confidence and complete the required commissioning tests in a comprehensive and efficient way.
The comprehensive sessions will give practical guidance on the requirements for testing solar PV installations as set out by the new IEC 62446 standard and in line with MCS requirements.
The course will clearly explain how to carry out installation commissioning tests and site surveys as well as complete system documentation offering particpants the opportunity to have a go on real test equipment designed to meet the requirements of IEC 62446.
The half day courses are being held on midweek dates throughout the end of September and during October at venues across the country(note: see full schedule details below).
Full explanations and demonstrations of all required solar PV electrical tests will be provided to ensure that solar PV electrical installations are installed safely and effectively and that systems perform to required levels.
As well as formal presentations, best practice advice and hands on practical interaction with dedicated test equipment, all training courses will also include question and answer sessions to ensure that participants gain as broad an understanding as possible of the electrical test issues associated with solar PV system installation.
Attendance on the training courses is free and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
